PAULA RADCLIFFE EAT YOUR HEART OUT
Pittk, in his own words, survived the Plymouth Half Marathon, just! He staggered around in 2 hours 16 minutes which is just under 6 MPH about the same speed as a steam roller going down hill on a good day. The good thing is that all his efforts were rewarded as he managed to raise £285 for the RNBT (Submarine Memorial Fund) with still some to collect in.If you look closely at the picture you will notice that they didn’t just get a battery in for Pittk’s pacemaker, they got an entire aggreko shore supply generator.
WELL DONE PITTK, SEE YOU IN BEIJING
EXCITING NEW PROJECT NOW UNDER WAY
Pittk has spent the last few years painstakingly researching and documenting the history and the life of HMS Courageous and her crew. He has written thousands of words on the subject and has travelled many miles to seek out records at the National Records Office, The Ministry of Defence and many other establishments. He has interviewed crew members from Cook to Captain and has done an extremely good job of piecing together the boat’s history and life.
Now, in conjunction with Captain David Wixon, an experienced producer of high quality books as well as an experienced author himself, the book is moving toward the publishing stage. It is to be a high quality, hardback, full colour document which does justice to the boat and her crew.
Unfortunately such a publication does not cost mere pennies and it is estimated that the project will cost as much as £30,000 to bring to fruition.
It is planned to offer “membership” of the project at different levels in return for sponsorship. “Members” will be recognised by an entry and acknowledgement of their contribution in the book frontispiece. In addition the book will be offered for pre-purchase so that purchasers can buy the book in advance and the money can be used to assist in funding the completion of the project.
Pittk and David will also be seeking corporate sponsorship so if you know of any companies who were involved in the building or maintenance of Courageous please contact Pittk. In addition, if you are personally interested in “membership” or assisting in funding the project in any way, please also contact Pittk using the e-mail below.
Thank you

In her new position in three basin the boat is once again finally open to visitors.
As always the volunteers continue their splendid work in sourcing equipment and resources to assist them in returning the boat to her former glory. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them for all their hard work and assure them that they do have our full support. Congratulations to all the volunteers.
We look forward to hearing more of the progress in presenting Courageous as a first class exhibit to show the work carried out by her crew and her sister submarines during their distinguished service.
In the short term, to book a tour please use the telephone number 01752 553941 and you can also visit the museum website at www.royalnavy.mod.uk/server/show/nav.5520 (We apologise but this is possibly the most useless website in UK as it is not easy to find exactly what you want)The 7th Pittk newsletter, dated October 2007 has now been sent for printing and will be posted to members soon. SOCIETY MEMBERS NOW AUTHORS, WHAT NEXT?
Since its inception The Society has not ranked an author among its ranks, unless somebody is hiding their light under a bushel. Just when you think that authors don’t really exist among submariners, lo and behold, two members of The Society have had books published in the same year.
Sam Fry, our President, and Chas Cooke, our ex Chairman, have both had books published in the first half of 2006.
Sam’s memoirs, entitled “Fruitful Rewarding Years - A Submariner’s Story” is published by The Memoir Club in hardback and is priced at £19-95. Sam’s book bears the ISBN number 1-84104-150-5 should you wish to order it.
Chas’s book, entitled “Why Should Britain Tremble? - A Submariner’s Tale” is published by Publish America and is available through Amazon at www.amazon.co.uk and other well known internet sites, including Tesco.com and WH Smith on line. Chas’s book bears the ISBN number 1-4241-1591-4 should you wish to place an order through your local bookshop or library.
The front cover of both books are shown below.
