The Association has been conforming to the agreements surrounding the proceeds of the Courageous Book and, as part of the agreement, a proportion of the proceeds are being donated to the Alliance Appeal. If any of you have seen the delapidated state of Alliance during recent visits you will realise just how much work is needed to ensure her safe future. A proportion of the funds will come from various grants but these will only be made if The Appeal raises money from other sources. The HMS Courageous Association is pleased to be able to assist by way of donation. Please click HERE to view the latest letter of thanks from The Alliance Appeal.

WAR PENSION ENTITLEMENT
If any of you are suffering from medical / health problems that you feel may be as a result of your naval service please read the following.
I recently began to suffer from joint problems in my shoulders, lower back, hands and hips. When speaking to others who served in submarines there are many suffering the same problems, particularly those who served in roles where heavy lifting in cramped conditions were involved. In addition I, like many others, served in diesel boats, where the damp and cramped living conditions may also have contributed to the subsequent health problems. For anyone who is doubtful of the problems which may have been caused by service in submarines then please follow the link below to see a report produced by the Australian Veteran’s Organisation.
Following discussion with other ex submariners and a number of medical appointments with my GP I submitted a claim for a war pension in respect of the health problems I am now experiencing. That claim was submitted in mid December 2010 and, in March 2011, I was awarded a pension, payable every 28 days. The payment was also backdated to the date of original submission of the claim in December. As part of the procedure I had to undergo a medical examination but this was carried out locally by an independent medical organisation and travel expenses could be claimed.
If you feel that you may be entitled to submit a claim for a war pension or other available compensation, you may do so by contacting the Veteran’s Agency at the following address.

GOOD LUCK WITH ANY CLAIMS MADE

The HMS Courageous Association has produced a wonderful hardback book to honour the service given by the submarine and her crew. Written by Michael Pitkeathly, our Association Archivist, the book is imaginitively written using facts gleaned from official records interspersed with tales and personal recollections provided by members of the crew. David Wixon edited the tome to a manageable level and drive the publication through to its conclusion.
The book is available in the Association Shop in this web site. An independent review of the book can be seen by clicking on the book cover shown here.
