HMS COURAGEOUS ASSOCIATION 2012 REUNION

BARROW IN FURNESS

FRIDAY 13TH APRIL TO SUNDAY 15TH APRIL 2012

REUNION DINNER TO TAKE PLACE AT THE LISDOONIE HOTEL ON SATURDAY 14TH APRIL 2012 – 1900 FOR 1930

The HMS Courageous Association Reunion 2012 will take place in Barrow in Furness over the wqeekend of 13th 14th and 15th of April 2012.

Due to the lack of large hotels able to accommodate all those attending under one roof we have been forced to take the decision whereby those attending will be required to book their own accommodation.

The hotels available are as follows:

Duke of Edinburgh Hotel

Rooms 34, if between 20 and 34 rooms are booked they can be discounted at present a Double/Twin is £85 B&B at the weekend.

Lisdoonie Hotel

Has only 12 rooms which are £40 for a single and £52 for a double on weekends.

The Travelodge

Has 58 rooms and if we book them all we could possibly get them at £19 per night provided it was booked online (there are no bookings to date on any of them) This does not have a restaurant however Asda is only a 5 minute walk and does a good breakfast.

There are other smaller hotels and B & Bs but none big enough to accommodate everyone.

None of the hotels with the exception of the Travelodge are prepared to give a price as the venue is so far in the future. We have featured all the above as they are as central as possible without going out of town.

The Royal British Legion is provisionally booked for a meet and greet on Friday 13th from 1930 onwards and it is hoped that Barrow Submariners Association will host this event.  The function room there is booked for Saturday the 14th in the morning to hold the AGM and Sunday 15th is booked for the farewell from lunchtime.

Pony Moore has volunteered to organise the Golf at Ulverston Golf Course, It is yet to be confirmed whether the golf will be on Friday or Saturday afternoon.

Pony has also volunteered to organise a trip around the Lake District for the Ladies but this will be dependent on numbers and early notification of names.

A visit to BAE Systems will be organised by John Houlding and Brian Benn however we are unable to promise an onboard visit although they will try. A tour around the Build Shed and surrounding attractions is not a problem.

At present the Oracle is closed to visitors under BAE H&S rules but there are moves afoot to reposition the Boat away from BAE land and open her up. We will keep you all appraised of the situation with respect to Oracle.

To give us an idea of numbers likely to attend we request that you follow the link below and fill out the forms indicating your intentions re your attendance and your requirements whilst at the event.

Also in the linked document is a meal booking form and details of deposits required.

We will only be able to welcome you to the meal if you complete and return a booking form with the relevant full payment

Although this is not our usual reunion format we are sure that it will be very enjoyable and will be the success that it has always been. Ass we Have always said, our reunions succeed because of the members attending, not because of the organisation. It really doesn’t matter how much organisation takes place, without our members attendance the reunion would not take place

Yours Aye,

The men who served in Courageous have a particular bond and as well as our main bi-annual reunion, details of which are shown above, members of The Association often meet up for an interim bash. One of those took place in Blackpool in May this year and a couple of photos have made their way to the Association inbox. Looks as though you had fun chaps. If anyone else has an interim reunion please feel free to send us pictures for inclusion in the web site.

bookplainThe HMS Courageous Association has produced a wonderful hardback book to honour the service given by the submarine and her crew. Written by Michael Pitkeathly, our Association Archivist, the book is imaginitively written using facts gleaned from official records interspersed with tales and personal recollections provided by members of the crew. David Wixon edited the tome to a manageable level and drive the publication through to its conclusion.

The book is available in the Association Shop in this web site. An independent review of the book can be seen by clicking on the book cover shown here.

Buy the book by visiting our shop using the shop link in the navigation bar below.
