The oceans of the world are teeming with life and busy with ships, all making a contribution to the sounds of the seas. The sonar operators in HMS Courageous spent their time on watch in the sound room listening to these sounds and deciding what was out there in the depths and which of the sounds meant that a threat was nearby. We have placed some of the recordings made of those sounds in the table below so that you can hear what we heard in the seas around us as we patrolled.

The HMS Courageous Association has produced a wonderful hardback book to honour the service given by the submarine and her crew. Written by Michael Pitkeathly, our Association Archivist, the book is imaginitively written using facts gleaned from official records interspersed with tales and personal recollections provided by members of the crew. David Wixon edited the tome to a manageable level and drive the publication through to its conclusion.
